Firefighters getting recertified

DINGMAN At Tuesday’s supervisors’ meeting Township Fire Chief Bill Mikulak reported that 10 of his volunteers will be retaking fire training classes in order to be recertified. “This recertification will help us get government grants more easily, because we are always asked if our volunteers are certified firefighters when we apply for funding. We want to make Dingman Township proud of us,” said Mikulak. Mikulak warned about thin ice on the lakes. He said the department recently responded to a rescue of two men out on a Shohola lake who had fallen through thin ice. Luckily, a passerby was able to help the two men and the water at that point was only neck deep. It could have been worse, he said, because the warm weather and warm rain fall have thinned out the ice covering lakes. Joe Cupcha of Pike County EMS reported there were 72 emergency responses in February and they are working on adding a second daytime medic, who will work out of Camp Akenac on state Route 739.
