Learn about local government
HAWLEY If you’re confused about local government in Pennsylvania, you are not alone. It’s really no surprise that Pennsylvania’s local government is so confusing since we have more local government than any other state. Whether you are a native or newcomer, Pennsylvania local government seems to be a giant maze of boroughs, townships, cities, a town, counties, school districts and special authorities - 4,681 units of local government in all. Because local government plays such an important role in each of our lives, it is essential that all citizens have an understanding an appreciation for the people and responsibilities that we collectively call “local government.” This is especially true in Pike and Wayne counties where some of our residents are relocating here from other states. Pike County Cooperative Extension is offering the program, Understanding Local Government in Pennsylvania, to provide an overview of local government and the Municipalities Planning Code which provides the authority for local governments in Pa. Learn about the various structure of boards, councils and commissions and how they function. Understanding Local Government in Pennsylvania will take place on Wednesday, May 13 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the PP&L Environmental Learning Center at Lake Wallenpaupack on US Route 6. The program is free, but pre-registration is required by May 8. For more information, contact Penn State Cooperative Extension in Pike County at 570-296-3400 or PikeExt@psu.edu
