Learning at the cemetery

WESTFALL — Students at Delaware Valley Elementary School had an opportunity to be a small part of a special project that is quietly undertaken each year by a Milford couple and their family. A small group of DVE-TV reporters visited Milford Cemetery this spring. They filmed and interviewed Godfrey and Norma Drake and their family and friends who joined in what has become a longtime tribute to our country’s deceased veterans. Have you ever noticed the dozens of flags that are regularly and caringly placed on the graves of veterans at Milford Cemetery? They are placed there by the Drake family each Memorial Day, and have been for the past 50 years. “In the past few years we have been coming back to help our parents, just as we did when we were kids. I think we are a bit more help now,” said a smiling Lisa Rosser, in reference to her parents. “We are so very proud of them.” Norma and Godfrey Drake began the tradition on their own and have over the years been joined by their children, grandchildren in friends in what is a large and honorable undertaking. This spring, the DVE-TV students felt personally inspired to join in the project after interviewing the couple and realizing the importance of what they do.
