Learning how to spell Thank you, Rotary Club'
Dictionaries for all Pike third graders By Olivia Wilkins of Janelle Mang’s sixth grade WESTFALL If you haven’t heard, the Milford-Matamoras Rotary Club is a group of people who give dictionaries to third graders. They also spray pest bugs in Africa, and all kinds of other great projects that help our world and the people in it. Some of the members of the Rotary Club are Dr. Tom Finan, Bob Wein, Ann Gillerlane, and the president of the Rotary Club is Art Ridley. These are the members who visited all of the third grades at Delaware Valley Elementary School this school year and gave every third grader a dictionary. When the children were asked what a dictionary helps them with the most, they said, of course, that it helps them with spelling. However, the dictionaries they received from the Rotary also contain all kinds of other useful information. The Rotary Club is also active all over the world. They also give people scholarships. You can become a Rotary Club member when you are older if you would like. I came along to watch the dictionary presentation and also on an interview with Tara Seger (6C) and Liam Donahue (6M) with the president of the Rotary Club. Art Ridley has been a member of the Rotary Club for 25 years. He said that the Rotary Club is an International Organization that helps people who cannot help themselves. He also said that dictionaries mostly help kids spell but are a gift that can be used to find out lots of other information. The Milford-Matamoras Rotary Club goes to every school in Pike County to give dictionaries to third graders each school year. They are also helping build a hospital. Ridley’s favorite part of being in the Rotary Club is helping people. His advice to everyone is to study hard. Moreover, he said that dictionaries come in handy. In the beginning of the Rotary dictionaries, there is a thing called the Four-Way Test of the things the Rotary members ask before doing anything. Before they think, say, or do, they ask: 1.Is it the truth? 2. Is it fair to all concerned? 3.Will it build GOOD WILL and better friendships? 4.Will it be beneficial to all concerned? We thank the Rotary for all they do to help everyone.
