Library submits a new review application

Borough architectural review board to see revised design MILFORD The Pike County Public Library (PCPL) has filed a new application with the Milford Borough Architectural Review Board (ARB) for a Certificate of Appropriateness for its new East Harford Street headquarters. The library’s previous application to the borough was temporarily withdrawn last December when the borough’s outside architectural consultant, Peter Benton, provided a report on the application. The new library application accompanies a new façade design generated as a direct result of two factors: first, the Benton Report itself and second, substantive discussions between the library’s architect, Frederick Schwartz, and Benton, who provided Schwartz with feedback from the review board members about modifications they wanted to see. The new façade design responds specifically to the input from the review board as well as the Benton report itself. According to library Board member, Tom Hoff, “The library is pleased to have submitted this application, which demonstrates the willingness and desire of the Library to work with the borough and its consultant and to fully address their concerns. Peter Benton’s December report for the first time provided our architect, Frederic Schwartz, with specific details on the ways in which Benton believed that the library’s original façade design should be modified in order to comply with Milford’s Historic District Ordinance. “At the same time, Mr. Benton praised the overall organization of the design, and the proportions of the wings to the central section of the building. We are delighted that Mr. Schwartz was able to be both flexible and creative in accommodating one hundred percent of Mr. Benton’s concerns, while still maintaining the beautiful interior space that has been a hallmark of his design since its inception. Mr. Schwartz’s conversations with Mr. Benton were productive and we look forward to working with the ARB to get this new façade design approved promptly.” Hoff concluded. The new Library headquarters is an essential element in the PCPL’s plan to expand and improve countywide library services. Ellen Schaffner, Library Director, points out, “In these tough economic times, free public library services are more important than ever to Pike County residents. Library usage grew by approximately 50% over the past two years. The PCPL simply cannot continue to meet the growing demand for services and cannot fulfill its plans for new programs and branches without the new headquarters.” To see the full text of the library’s new application to the Architectural Review Board, visit www.pcpl.org .
