MILFORD — Dr. Fuhai Li, a physician practicing at the Neurology and Pain Management Center in Milford before his July 20 arrest, maintains his innocence, according to his attorney, Michael Weinstein of Milford.
"He's eager for this matter to be resolved so the justice system can do its job," Weinstein said. "We believe when the facts come out in court, they will show Dr. Li did nothing wrong."
Dr. Li has been accused by federal authorities for operating a pill mill, where narcotics are dispensed without a legitimate medical purpose. He was taken into custody by Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) agents and appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Joseph F. Saporito Jr. in Wilkes-Barre. He was indicted on 24 counts. A Federal Grand Jury alleges the illegal activity began in early 2011 and continued into 2015.
DEA agents found more than $1 million in cash when searching Li’s office and residences in January 2015.
Gary Tuggle, Special Agent in Charge of the DEA's Philadelphia Field Division, said Dr. Li allegedly distributed a controlled substance that resulted in the death of one of his patients.
Prosecution has been assigned to Assistant U.S. Attorney Michelle Olshefski.
If found guilty as charged, Dr. Li faces life imprisonment.
