MINISINK, N.Y. (AP) — Authorities say dozens of cats were found living in squalid conditions inside an abandoned upstate home where police found several dead animals in the backyard.

An Orange County sheriff's deputy was sent earlier this week to evict a family from a home in the town of Minisink.

Officials say the family had fled and left about 50 cats and two dogs inside a house covered in animal waste. Police say several cats and a dog were found dead behind a barn on the property.

Workers from a no-kill shelter have taken in all the surviving animals.

No charges have been filed. The investigation is continuing.
