On Sunday, Sept. 11, DVE-TV student reporters had their first on-location reporting for the 2016-17 school year at the 9/11 event in the Town of Deerpark Town Hall in Huguenot, N.Y.
There were many officials from Port Jervis/Deerpark and the Port Jervis High School Chamber Choir there. We learned things about 9/11 that we never knew before. We were then asked to help hang ribbons on the memorial tree with Flo Santini and Tillie Geidel Conklin (daughter of Gary Geidel). At the end of the ceremony, we were asked to sing "God Bless America" with Catherine Westfall.
After that, everyone was invited for refreshments. We interviewed four people.
Raymond Zukowski was a man that was in New York when the attacks happened.
Charles Grant told us about Flight 93 and how he is devoting his life to telling everyone about the people on Flight 93, so no one will ever forget. He has a newspaper covering articles about the flight.
We also spoke with Flo Santini and Catherine Westfall who run this incredible, annual service.
We asked all of them if they felt that this would ever happen again. Half of them felt it might because technology always changes. They did tell us to not live in fear and that we should talk with our parents about it and be prepared.
Before we left, we saw a broken beam from the Twin Towers. It was a day and an event that we will never forget.
