Students in Mrs. Zegarski’s third-grade class did an activity called, “pigeon pairings,” in which they tracked how traits are passed from parents to babies. They’ve discovered that when breeders pick animals with certain traits and breed them together, those traits get stronger over time. The students realize it’s not random and humans shape these animals on purpose. By understanding how traits are inherited, students see why pigeon breeds look so wild and different from one another.
