— A fun, fee-free day to show appreciation to the community for its support throughout the year is planned for Saturday, Sept. 26, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., at Grey Towers National Historic Site, 122 Old Owego Turnpike, Milford.

The day includs free admittance to the Grey Towers mansion, free ice cream, free magic show for kids and a free performance by the regional band ‘Poison Love.

US Forest Service Chief Tom Tidwell will attend to announce the agency’s participation in a new White House initiative for fourth graders and their families “to connect the next generation of stewards to their federal lands.” Every Kid in a Park offers fourth graders throughout the nation passes for free admission for themselves and family members to Federal lands for one year. Grey Towers will be distributing the passes and offers a variety of free programs for these students and their families.

Also commemorating National Public Lands Day, the day includes two trail work and cemetery clean-up sessions, each from 10 a.m. to noon. Volunteers are sought for this activity, whether groups or individuals.

Sponsored by the US Forest Service with support from the Grey Towers Heritage Association, the Community Appreciation Day includes a re-creation of Gov. Gifford Pinchot’s ice cream social from 2 to 4 p.m. Families are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, blankets and a picnic to enjoy on the estate grounds.
