Milford Township discusses new tax

A tight budget inspired a discussion of an earned income tax by the Milford Township Supervisors at their Monday, April 21, meeting.

The supervisors will invite Berkheimer Tax Innovations, Inc., of Butler, to the Monday, June 2, meeting to discuss potential revenue and a new tax’s impact on property taxes.

Supervisor and Roadmaster Gary Williams said that his team has been cutting brush and filling potholes throughout the area.

The dirt road leading to Lily Pond is in need of repair and difficult to maintain due to the high traffic volume. The state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources was contacted to make repairs to its section of the road but no action was taken by the time of the meeting.

The township’s 2000 Ford pickup will no longer pass the Pennsylvania State safety inspection and necessary repairs are estimated to cost between $6,000 and $6,500.

Milford Borough installed a stop sign at the corner of Sixth and Elizabeth streets but that intersection may actually be in the township. The supervisors will have that looked into.

The Ecumenical Food Pantry at 321 5th St. may be receiving assistance on Election Day if the Pike County Elections Office approves a food drive on Tuesday, May 20, at the township building.

The supervisors were asked to support the effort to return the lighted Christmas star to Milford Knob Park. A Milford Borough is sending a letter to Representative Rob Bresnahan (R-8) asking for help convincing the National Park Service to return the star. It was removed in December 2017 according to the website Change.org. The local Lions Club originally erected the structure.

In other news, Old Owego Turnpike will be closed on Thursday, May 16 from 1:30 to 6 p.m. between Grey Towers and Route 6 to accommodate the taking of prom photos.

Beth Kuemerle was appointed to the Zoning Hearing board. A meeting on the zoning map update will be held Monday, June 16 at 7:15 p.m.
