— The United Way of Pike County came through for the food pantry, which needs help building a safe and sanitary pantry and distribution center at the Dreher Township Building in Wayne County.
The Pike County Food Pantry, which serves both Pike and Wayne Counties, is building the center to serve low-income residents from Green Township in Pike and the very southern end of Wayne County. It is currently operating out of the Moravian Church in Newfoundland, where quarters are inadequate for both storage and distribution, and unsafe for the public and volunteers. The pantry was recently granted $136,886 of its $152,628 request, which fell short of the amount needed to cover the project.
"When the Pike County Food Pantry reached out to me in regards to their situation, I felt it was important that the United Way of Pike County assist them in raising the funds," said Matt Osterberg, president of the United Way of Pike County, whose mission is to assist those in need of food or shelter.
