Wayne Highlands, Wallenpaupack compete at state Envirothon

— The 2017 Pike/Wayne Envirothon was won overall by the Wayne Highlands School District team, Wumbo Wombats!
Second place went to the Lumens of Wallenpaupack Area School District, and third place went to the Seagulls of Wallenpaupack Area School District.
The 31st annual Envirothon was held April 27 at the Wallenpaupack Environmental Learning Center in Hawley. The Wayne Highlands team represented Wayne County at the State Envirothon held at University of Pittsburgh Johnstown on May 23-24. The highest-scoring team for Pike County, Lumens from Wallenpaupack School District, represented Pike at the state event. Their scores are as follows:

Delaware County won the state competition with an overall score of 531 out of 600.
About the EnvirothonThis one-day educational competition is designed to test the knowledge, skills and problem-solving capabilities of high school students regarding our earth’s natural resources.
Delaware Valley, Wayne Highlands, Wallenpaupack, and Western Wayne High Schools competed in the local Envirothon. Five-member teams competed by applying their knowledge and problem-solving skills in subject areas that included: Aquatic Ecology, Forestry, Soils/Land Use, Wildlife, and a Current Issue, which was Agricultural Soil and Water Conservation Stewardship.
The Pike/Wayne Envirothon and Pennsylvania Envirothon partner with the U.S.D.A. Natural Resources Conservation Service, Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission, Pennsylvania Game Commission, Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resource Bureaus of Forestry and State Parks, the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture, and the Pennsylvania Department of Education to bring this competition to students each year. These partners provide educational reference materials for high school teams as well as technical expertise, knowledge, and manpower at the event.
