PORT JERVIS, N.Y. Two Port Jervis police officers shot and killed 65-year-old Peter Venechanos of Lords Valley last Friday evening after he brandished a hand-grenade in the rear parking lot of Bon Secours Hospital. Police said they had been warned that the man was coming with intent to “do harm to himself and others.” The shooting took place at 5:07 p.m. Venechanos, a former NYC Police and Pike County Corrections officer, was a Vietnam veteran who reportedly suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder. State police technicians later ruled that the grenade used was inert. The two officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave.
