SPARROWBUSH - A frantic twilight search for a missing fisherman, turned into a recovery effort Thursday morning. At about 4:30 p.m., two Matamoras men overtuned a canoe they had launched minutes earlier from state boating ramp in Sparrowbush. Louis Puopolo, 21, managed to get to shore near Eddy Farm , but in the 39-degree water, 19 year-old Martin McDonough did not. Sparrowbush and Port Jervis rescuers were joined by Pike firefighters from Matamoras, Westfall, Mill Rift and Milford. As darkness fell, Pike County called out any available divers to assist, but the cold water and darkness forced rescuers to postpone their efforts until the morning. Pike County Sheriff Phil Bueki said rescuers requested his department’s cadaver smelling dog early Thursday morning, but no recovery was reported by the Courier’s press time.
