MILFORD — Repairs to the Interstate Highway 84 overpass for US Route 6 in Milford were going to be a small job, which turned into a major project. “Our job was to repair the damaged areas but there were too many of them so we have to redo the entire overpass,” said Project Superintendent Chris Holmes. The repair crew intended to remove the concrete surrounding the damaged areas and re-pour fresh mixed new concrete. After seeing the number of damaged areas PennDOT decided to remove the entire roadway decking down to the rebar. After replacing damaged or broken rebar the entire surface of the overpass will get new concrete poured to within one and a half inches of the surface. On top of this an inch and a half of latex- based concrete will finish off the new road surface. Holmes said crews would work up until about Christmas and then return in the spring to finish up the work. “There are 17 overpasses we are working on between Mt. Cobb and Matamoras for a total distance of 50 miles,” he added. Although the overpass was not dangerous, the work being performed will bring the overpass to like-new condition, he said. The westbound side of the overpass will remain closed till the repair work is completed.
