Park Service will analyze power line route
BUSHKILL The National Park Service will conduct its own review of the proposed Route B crossing for a new electric power transmission line. PPL Electric Utilities (PPL) and Public Service Electric and Gas Company (PSE&G) last Wednesday notified the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area of their selection of alternative route B as their preferred alternative for the proposed new and much larger Susquehanna to Roseland transmission line. The National Park Service (NPS) is awaiting official written notification of the selected preferred alternative from the consortium of power companies. The proposal needs to receive approval from the appropriate regulatory authorities in each state. The NPS will ensure a thorough environmental review of the potential impacts to the natural and human environments under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA). The proposed electric transmission corridor not only crosses the national recreation area in both Pennsylvania and New Jersey, but also crosses the Middle Delaware National Scenic River, the Appalachian Trail (AT), and many private properties, businesses, housing developments, resorts, and townships in the area. Superintendent John J. Donahue said will consult with other affected parties along the corridor, as well as with the United States Army Corps of Engineers, the United States Fish and Wildlife Service, and the appropriate state and local officials before any further comment is issued. “The public may rest assured that every effort will be made to protect the natural and cultural resources in this outstanding unit of the National Park System, the National Scenic River, the Appalachian Trail, as well as the unique recreational experiences they all provide for today’s visitors and for our children’s children. At Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, the National Park Service always makes every effort to balance legitimate societal needs with the legislated mission of protecting our local and national heritage,” said Donahue.
