MILFORD — Safe Haven of Pike County is sponsoring a new financial empowerment workshop for women who have struggled with issues of domestic violence. This free workshop has been underwritten by the Allstate Foundation. Participants will learn how to become pro-active in their own financial planning. Program topics covered are financial safety planning, financial goals, financial planning, budgeting, and tips for accessing community resources. Financial abuse is a common tactic used by an abusive partner to control and isolate women. It has far-reaching and devastating consequences. Because the experience of abuse is different for every woman, this workshop covers what women from varying backgrounds may experience when trying to overcome financial abuse. Financial planning and management are life-long processes. Surviving from day to day, struggling to make ends meet, escaping abuse and starting over may be frightening. Every woman has the right to be safe and understand that change is possible. Participants will learn strategies for dealing with their financial fears. Strategies for developing a financial inventory and assessment of resources, debts and other liabilities will be covered as well as discovering how to determine ones own cost of living. Participants will learn how to identify and contact organizations in their community for support and develop their own financial safety plan. Safe Haven, a community based crisis intervention center is proud to host this workshop for women in Pike County. Cynthia Edwards, Safe Haven direct service supervisor and Lauren Cernek, Safe Haven shelter coordinator will be facilitating the workshop. Sessions will be held at 500 West Harford Street in Milford on Tuesday evenings at 6 p.m., beginning April 14. A series of seven workshops will be offered, all free of charge. Pre-registration is required. Call 570-296-2827 to reserve your seat today! Space is limited.
