Perusing among career choices at Delaware Valley Middle School

WESTFALL n On Wednesday, May 9, Delaware Valley Middle School conducted a Career Day for 8th graders. The event was planned and directed by Gerard Geoffroy, 7/8 grade guidance counselor for the middle school. Students had the opportunity to attend three sessions out of the 39 that were presented. Many presentations included several different careers. Patti Hannon and Kevin Lennon conducted the first career day teleconference with the technology department of the University of Scranton. Numerous job opportunities in technology were discussed with 17 students through this innovative experience. Career information was also provided by the following guest speakers: Chris Edwards, actor and firefighter; Paul Degillio, architect; Vickie Connolly, artist; Jimmie Schaffer, athletics; Mike Dobrzyn and Mike Law, automotive; Christopher King and Greg Zukowski, business management; Dan Parent, cartoonist; Ray Wehner, chef; Pam Lutfy, child care; Gail Mills, chiropractor; Ron Belsterling, college professor; Patti Hannon and Kevin Lennon, computer techs; Ken Graham, criminal investigator; Dr. Seth Horn, dentist; Mark Toussaint and Dr. Clair Kenny, electrician/construction; Jim Farr, engineer; John Carawan, federal jobs; Doug Jacobs, Esq. and Jan Lokuta, Esq., lawyers; Sgt. Bill Capo, military; Maureen Donnelly, nursing; Thomas Duncan, photography; Dr. Ricardo Sequeira, physician; Eugenia Tice-Shepard PT, DPT, physical therapist; Michael Brown, pilot; Mark Moglia, police officer; Karen Gropman, production designer; Dr. Jean Weidholz, psychologist; Nicki Jones, public relations; Steve Dye, realtor; Rich Potere, secret service; Eric Langberg, small business owner; Becky Parsons and Scott Llewellyn, teachers; Julia Adams, travel and tourism and Dr. Richard Coburn, veterinarian. Presenters offered an overview of their career and incorporated unique personal experiences into their sessions. Students had the opportunity to see a multifaceted view of a career. Students learned the practical aspects of education and preparation for a career, the personal commitment that is required, and the rewards and satisfactions each of these representatives experience in their chosen occupation.
