Pike resident earns physician award “with commendation”

NEWTON - Newton Memorial Hospital is proud to announce that Dr. Joseph LiMarzi has earned the American Medical Association’s Physician Recognition Award for the seventh consecutive time. In the past, the AMA has required physicians interested in earning three-year certificates to take at least 150 hours of Certified Medical Education, which LiMarzi has done since 1988. Over the last three years, however, the AMA gave physicians the option to earn the award “with commendation” provided they complete at least 270 hours of Certified Medical Education (CME) during the preceding three years. LiMarzi earned his latest Physician Recognition Award “with commendation” after successfully completing 677.5 hours of CME since 2003-04, which is more than two-and-a-half times the AMA’s requirement. “It’s just a way of staying up to date,” he said. “It’s a personal accomplishment.” LiMarzi has been assistant director of Newton Memorial Hospital’s Emergency Department since 1996, and filled the same role since 2002 at the Milford Urgent Care. LiMarzi, a Pike County resident, is licensed to practice medicine in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Connecticut. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine, board certified in Emergency Medicine and certified in advanced cardiac, trauma and pediatric life support. He has attended schooling at the University of Rome, University of Cagliari, Sardinia and the University of Foreigners, Perugia, all of which are located in Italy. He also attended Fordham University in Bronx, N.Y. LiMarzi is the medical director of the Pike County Automated External Defibrillator Program and sits on the Advisory Committee of the Pike County Health Fund. He is a member of the American College of Physicians, American Association of Physician Specialists, American College of Emergency Physicians and American Association of Urgent Care Medicine.
