Pike tells Milford okay,we're gone'
MILFORD As requested by the township earlier this month, Pike County’s recycling bins are being removed from township building property on US Route 6/209. Pike County Commissioner Harry Forbes said the county has replied to the township’s 90-day notice to vacate with a letter thanking Milford for its past assistance and confirming that the bins will be moved. Forbes said that pending a borough review of the plan, the recycling station is to be relocated to county property, at the former Miller Oil location on West George Street. On Aug. 18 the Milford Supervisors adopted a motion to evict the recycling operation, saying Pike officials had ignored three separate requests for a county spokesman to appear before them to detail future recycling plans. Forbes denied that charge, saying he had spoken to Supervisor Gary Williams about the issue “on several occasions,” in the interim. Forbes said program cost and revenue information was not then complete. “The problem is that going to a meeting without the information you need is not the best way to do something,” he said. In July, supervisors’ chair Don Quick was concerned that a rumored takeover of the program by a private firm would have that firm doing business on township property, without compensation to the township. Forbes said the program, while important, is a break-even proposition at best and several firms are still to be interviewed regarding its future. No decisions about who will operate it have been made. “The question is, can we do a program that makes sense and is cost effective?’”
