Police intervene on apparent suicide attempt
SHOHOLA Pennsylvania and New York State Police became involved in a negotiation to talk a distraught man out of jumping from the interstate bridge over the Delaware River last Sunday. According to N.Y. police, the 42- year-old Hawley man, whose name The Courier has chosen to withhold, parked his vehicle on the Pennsylvania side of the bridge and had walked out to the center of the bridge, which is about 40 feet above the river at its highest point. The man, who was described as being distraught because of problems within his family, threatened to jump. Police said the standoff ended after about two hours, and a Lackawaxen ambulance then transported the man to Bon Secours Hospital in Port Jervis for observation. There was no report of any injuries or charges being filed.
