WESTFALL — Three Delaware Valley High School juniors were awarded prizes for their outstanding essays by the Milford-Matamoras Rotary Club, Rotary International District 7410. The contest, opened to all 11th grade students, is an annual event. The essay, of approximately 250-300 words, challenged the students for their thoughts and opinions on the theme, “How can serving as a volunteer benefit my community and me — can I really make a difference?” The three Delaware Valley High School students who were recognized for their essays will present their work at a Milford/Matamoras Rotary Club luncheon meeting. First prize of $100 was awarded to Brian Mattos, son of Dr. Cathleen Mattos and Dr. Harold Haroldsen of Milford. Kayla Strohmeier, daughter of Christine and Michael Strohmeier of Matamoras, won the second prize of $75; and the third prize, $50, was given to Daniella Haigler, daughter of Cathy McGuire of Milford. Brian Mattos’ essay will be forwarded to the district level to be included in the judging of as many as 45 essays from Rotary Clubs in the ten counties of Northeastern Pennsylvania. First place at the district level wins $1,000, second place wins $500 and third place can earn $250.
