Soapbox Derby announces division for disabled drivers

PORT JERVIS, N.Y. The June 8 Port Jervis Soap Box Derby will have a new division called the Super Kids Division. This is a soap box derby race for youths with disabilities and will allow these children the chance to get the thrill of the hill. This new division will allow drivers with varying degrees of disabilities to race in the Port Jervis PBA Soap Box Derby just as their friends and siblings have. Derby Director Wayne Addy said “When I saw the super kids division for the first time last year in Akron, I knew that I had the support here in Port Jervis to make it work. I came home and said We have to do this. It is a MUST for our derby.’” Special cars have been created by derby volunteers Ken and Bob Scott using blueprints from the cars seen in Akron. The cars are fabricated with the appropriate modifications to suit the new drivers’ needs. Hours of craftsmanship went into these remarkable vehicles that will give these children this amazing opportunity. These special cars also have special sponsors including The Choey Memorial Scholarship Fund, Jeff’s Auto Repair, and Inspire. Private contributions were also received from other derby families to make these cars possible. Derby Director, Wayne Addy said “There are many man hours that have gone into these cars. They are crafted like a fine piece of furniture. Ken and Bob have brought this to life for us.” The Super Kids race will follow the derby’s other divisions as it will send a champion driver out to Akron, Ohio in July to compete in the All-American Soap Box Derby “Super Kids Classic” to represent Port Jervis. The Port Jervis PBA Soapbox Derby is Sunday June 8. For more information on the Port Jervis Soap Box Derby, visit PJSoapBoxDerby.com or call 845-800-1000.
