— Delaware Valley High School defeated Hazleton Area High School in varsity football on Sept. 18.

The final score was 35-6. The game took place at Delaware Valley High School.

The win was the first this season for the Delaware Valley Warriors. The Warriors were crushed in the first two games of the season by the Upper Dublin High School Cardinals of Fort Washington (42-7) and the Wyoming Valley West Senior High School Spartans of Plymouth (30-6), respectively. Things were different this time around with the Warriors doing the crushing.

The Hazleton Area High School Cougars were victorious in their season debut against the James M. Coughlin High School Crusaders of Wilkes-Barre (22-20) but were humbled in week two in a loss to the Scranton High School Knights (26-3).

The Warriors got down to business right away. They dominated on offense and defense. By halftime the score was 14-0 in the Warriors favor. Hazleton did not reach the end zone until the fourth quarter. By that time, it was too little, too late for the Cougars.

Delaware Valley quarterback Matt Cavallaro passed for 166 yards and 4 touchdowns. Running back Austin Cernek caught two of those touchdown passes. Cernek also rushed for 84 yards to go along with the 50 yards from receptions. He also earned one rushing touchdown.

Kicker Josh Goulette booted 5 extra point kicks to polish off Delaware Valley's offense.

Delaware Valley linebacker Kyle Dillon intercepted one pass during the game.

Hazleton's Joey Bayzick intercepted one pass during the game.
