Well Saturday, December 16, was a very active night for local high school basketball. I already wrote an article on the freshman and junior varsity teams, which both won big and remain undefeated. The varsity team not fare so well.

East Stroudsburg South came out like a gang of sharp shooters. They hit seven threes in the first period, setting the score at 21-14 at the end of the first period. Delaware Valley struggled to get back in the game but the shooting was just off. ESS didn’t do much better, so the half ended with ESS still up 29-22.

The third period was stunning in how many shots Delaware Valley missed. They had the opportunities but just couldn’t connect. If they made half of their shots this would have been a close battle. Instead it was 40-31 ESS at the end of the third period.

In the fourth period, Delaware Valley was totally flat until the end. Even the surest shooters — Tommy Parker, Isiah Berrios and Tyler Lombardo — couldn’t get it done. Then late in the period Parker hit a three. So did Berrios, and Lombardo made three slashing layups, scoring six points. It just was too little, too late. The varsity team lost 50-43.

This is how the scoring went: Jaxon Barbilach had 12, Tyler Lombardo scored nine, Nick Jorgenson and Isiah Berrios both had seven, Jackson Corrie had six, and finally Logan Olsommer scored two. Don’t underestimate the last three names here. They are solid ball players and ball handlers and make a strong contribution to the team.

On another note. The holiday tournament begins in December 27 and will run until January 6.

This gives you a look at other area schools that might not be on the regular season schedule, such as Wilkes Barre, Minisink Valley, Port Jervis, East Stroudsburg North, North Pocono, Scranton and Abington Heights. Not all games will be played locally, so check with the school for times and locations. These games will include varsity, JV and freshman, both girls and boys.
