New group supports Special Olympics

MILFORD — Twenty-eight Delaware Valley staff members representing all seven schools will take part in the Scranton Half Marathon in April. The group, called "DV for Area P" (named for the geographic area of Lackawanna, Susquehanna, Wayne, Pike, and Wyoming Counties) will run the 13.1-mile course with an eye on raising money and awareness for Special Olympics, one of many causes DV has supported over the years.

The idea started when Special Education teacher John Staub approached administrator Maria Farrell about needing some personal motivation to train for the race while helping a worthy cause. The two, both veteran runners, came up with the plan and the word spread quickly. Within a week, 28 runners had signed on. For several runners, this will be their first attempt at the half marathon.

A number of fundraising opportunities will take place over the next few months including obtaining personal and corporate sponsors, T-shirt and food-item sales and raffles.

To donate, make a check payable to Area P Special Olympics and send to The Dingman Delaware Middle School, Attention: John Staub, 1365 Route 739, Dingmans Ferry, Pa 18328.
