— Mount St. Mary's University Men's Rugby player Nicholas Maffei of Milford was part of the team that won at the National Small College Rugby Organization (NSCRO) Final Four championship game in Denver, Colo., on April 30 and May 1.
Mount St. Mary's last-minute try sealed their 26 to 19 win over The Claremont Colleges to earn the 2016 NSCRO Small College National Championship.
After victories against University of North Florida and Duke University in the Mid Atlantic South Regional Sweet 16 Tournament, Mount St. Mary's University Men's Rugby team won the Regional Championship for the third year in a row before moving on to the final four.
Maffei is a junior at MSMU and plays Prop. Currently ranked first in NSCRO, the team is preparing to take on the next round of competition.
At the Mount, men's rugby is still considered a club sport under the Department of Campus Recreation. Although the team is quickly outgrowing the model for club sports in their budget and level of competitiveness, men's rugby takes pride in the volunteer opportunities they participate in as a team.
