Students sculpt a Native American

Hawley - Members of the Special Arts Club at Wallenpaupack Area High School constructed a papier-mache Native American mannequin, which is now on display by the Wallenpaupack Historical Society, located at the PP&L Wallenpaupack Environmental Learning Center, on U.S. Route 6, in Hawley. Students who worked on the mannequin, pictured above right, under the direction of their teacher Lori Gearhart were: Manami York, Schuyler Grant, Stephanie Box, Valerie Frank, Brad Crandall, Alyssa Foster, Staci Sabatino, Andrew Hyduchak, Victoria Sullivan, Danielle Mertens, Candy Andrejcisk and Christine Wasco. Other Native American artifacts can be seen along with an authentic Native American canoe which historians believe to be from 1600’s and used by the Lenni Lenape Indians that were in the area. The 18’ dug out canoe was turned over to PP&L for permanent display by Mrs. Lucy P. Unger. Also located in the display is another mannequin whose clothing was patterned after Native American dress was made by Inge Beidleman, Shirley Coutts, Bea Martin and materials donated by Nancy Gumble.
