The place where the roads meet

Port Jervis, N.Y. - A Jan. 28 photo exhibit at city hall marked the beginning of a year-long centennial celebration for the City of Port Jervis. Historian Peter Osborne said the city’s effort to incorporate was courageous. “It took vision and foresight,” he said. The Town of Deerpark strongly opposed the loss of the village that provided the bulk of its tax revenues. Because of its geographic location, the loss of Port Jervis pretty much cut Deerpark in two,” Osborne added. It was a time when the country was coming of age, Osborne said. Many of the 176 photo prints Brian Lewis created for the exhibit demonstrate Port Jervis’ long history as transportation hub for highways, the Delaware and Hudson Canal and the Erie Railroad. Clark’s photos will be displayed again on Feb. 24 at a 7 p.m. band concert at the Drew Methodist Church.
