Milford — As Americans, we have the ability to make an extraordinary impact on the lives of our neighbors and community by lending a helping hand. “Scouting for Food” is Boy Scouting’s community stewardship project aimed at addressing the problem of hunger in the community in which we live and work. It is a food collection effort carried out by Boy Scouts, Venturers, and Cub Scouts from your community and because volunteerism is the basis of good citizenship—an important part of Boy Scout character. Natural disasters and other hardships have caused a huge increase in hunger in the United States. That’s why Boy Scout Troop 71 is participating in the annual food drive, Scouting for Food. The Scouts believe that you can make a difference, right here in our own backyard, if we all work together. Some 10,000 Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, their families, volunteers, businesses, corporations and organizations from Northeastern Pennsylvania will cooperate in this community service project. Troop 71 will be at the Grand Union on Saturday, Nov. 3, from 9 a.m. to 12 noon, collecting donations that will go to the Ecumenical Food Pantry on 5th and Catherine Streets in Milford. The Boy Scout Troop is hoping to make a dramatic impact in our local communities. Nonperishable items needed include all canned or plastic contained goods, boxed foods, soups, and canned meats, as well as baby products. High protein foods like tuna fish, canned beans and peanut butter now lead the list, along with low-sugar cereal, 100% juice drinks and canned fruit. Glass containers are discouraged because they are difficult to transport. Once food is collected, the number of items counted and sorted, the goods will be delivered to the Food Pantry on Friday, Nov. 9 for distribution by members of the First Presbyterian Church of Milford and Boy Scout Troop 71. The Ecumenical Food Pantry provides food to those who are experiencing difficult times. The Food Pantry is open every Friday night from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Clients are referred by area churches and social service agencies in the tri-state area. For more information call 570-296-2227.
