MILFORD — Do you love history? Are you a “people person?” Would you like to help conservation of natural resources? The US Forest Service is looking for candidates to volunteer at Grey Towers National Historic Site in Milford. An orientation session is planned for Saturday Apr. 18 from 10 a.m. to noon, to introduce potential volunteers to a brief history of Grey Towers and the various volunteer opportunities, including tour guides, visitor services and gift shop assistants, gardens, trails, and archival work in the museum. Commitments can vary from a few hours a week to several days per week during the visitor season, which runs from May through December. Special volunteer incentives, including a dinner at the Fingerbowl outdoor dining table, are offered to Grey Towers volunteers. Anyone interested in learning more about volunteering at Grey Towers is encouraged to attend the orientation session. Pre-registration is required by calling 570-296-9630 or sending an e-mail to greytowers@fs.fed.us/gt. Grey Towers, ancestral of home of conservationist and two-term Governor Gifford Pinchot, is located on Old Owego Turnpike (behind Apply Valley restaurant) in Milford. It is administered by the US Forest Service, the agency founded in 1905 by Pinchot and President Theodore Roosevelt as a museum and active conservation center. In addition to the guided house and garden tours, the Forest Service offers a number of public programs, including specialized tours, forestry programs, children’s programs, school outings and programs that focus on conservation and the arts.
