EAST STROUDSBURG — Junior Kory Wilson had no trouble leading the offense for Delaware Valley (DV)High School, running for 64 yards and snagging three touchdowns to contribute to the team’s 41-11 win over East Stroudsburg North (ESN). The Friday, August 29 game opened the season for DV on East Stroudsburg’s turf. Wilson initiated the offense’s drive shortly into the first quarter, returning an ESN punt to the 5 yard line. Ten minutes and a few turnovers later, kicker Anthony Cavallaro put DV on top with a 23-yard field goal. East Stroudburg’s possession was quickly stopped, and Dan Saita and Hank Neurouter brought the ball back into ESN territory. With less than four minutes in the first quarter, Neurouter ran in the first TD of the night. His eight-yard run was part of the 102 yards he racked up that night. Cavallaro’s extra point put DV at 10-0. On ensuing kickoff return , the Stroudsburg Timberwolves pushed their way to DV’s 42 yard line, before fumbling the ball to Kyle Lutz with three minutes on the clock. The quarter ended with no significant gain on the field. While Lutz’s recovery made no gain, Neurouter grabbed up a ESN fumble of his own, half-way through the second quarter. After a steady offensive push towards the end-zone, Wilson ran 17 yards for his first touchdown of the game. Seven minutes remained as Cavallaro put up another extra point for a 17-0 lead. A Timberwolf interception at :58 broke up DV’s streak, and ESN carried the ball to the 12 yard line. Though ESN was held by DV defense, the team managed a fourth down field goal. Half a dozen plays later, DV also kicked a field goal, closing the first half with a 20-3 score. Both teams shared possession for the majority of the third quarter, until quarterback Ian Maute sent Mark Pike on a 41-yard touchdown play. Further into the quarter, Wilson made the play again with a 47-yard punt return for a touchdown; he soon boasted another TD that was forced in at the buzzer. Entering the final quarter, DV led 40-3. Cavallaro kicked in a field goal at the start of the fourth quarter, scoring DV’s 41st and final point of the night. In their final effort, the Timberwolves continuously gained yards throughout the beginning of the period, grabbing a touchdown off a 95-yard run. The then-rainy game ended 41-11. Edwin Balcarcel, who alternates at the QB position with Maute, was proud of how the team played. “I thought we did very well for our first game, but we still have lots of improvements to make,” he said. “There were some miscommunications between the line and the quarterbacks, so we just have to fix that and some of the silly mistakes we made.” On tonight’s match-up against East Stroudsburg South: “They’re a better team than we played last year, so it’ll be a great football game. As long as everyone does their job, we’ll be fine.” Kickoff is at 7 p.m., and the football booster club’s “Warrior Festival” will take place beforehand.
