Whatever works

MILFORD The name on her card says Jean C. Work, but perhaps it should say, See Jean Work, because if you drop by Work’s Frame Shop in the Lumberyard at any time, you can see Jean Work working. She does all of her custom framing on the premises and it is most amazing sight to view the equipment she uses and to see how adept she is at using it. In addition to moveable walls of hundreds of frame samples, some of the fascinating equipment she uses includes a wall mounted glass cutter, a chop saw, and a guillotine chopper. The wall mounted glass cutter is a huge contraption which cuts glass, Plexiglas, foam boards, and mat board. It can cut anything as small as two inches up to five feet. The green guillotine chopper has a heavy, sharp blade held aloft between upright guides which then drops to behead wood molding used for frames. Work didn’t start her professional life as a framer. She had been doing real estate for Century 21 in Dingmans Ferry and Milford for several years, but was searching for a more creative way to express her passion for the arts. She decided to become a framer about 5 years ago, having gone through the program at the American Picture Framing Academy in Southington Connecticut. Work has kept up her skills by attending advanced framing courses after graduating from the program. Work operated her frame shop out of her home in Dingmans Ferry, but when the opportunity to have a shop in the Lumberyard came about a year ago, she jumped at it. Jean’s warm smile radiates as she says, “The Lumberyard is great. It’s a wonderful place to be; good food, great people, and fun.” Part of the fun is Works’s new monthly featured artist series. This month she is featuring the work of Karl Wint with his stunning photographs on canvas. Wint’s works are prominently displayed in the shop and will also be a part of Milford Art after Dark which has a “meet the artist” reception on the Second Saturday of each month. Wint also does photo restoration which can be arranged through Work’s shop. In selecting artists for her series, Work is trying to stay in a moderate price range. Her theory is that good art and good quality framing can be affordable. Work will build a custom from for any type of art work; etchings, painting, lithographs, and photographs. She has a huge selection of options to choose from and most importantly, she is very approachable and welcoming. Work’s Frame Shop Full Service Custom Picture Framing Owner: Jean C.
