About the justice system

To the editor: I am writing this letter because I think it is about time deadbeat parents face justice. I’m writing this based on my own experience with the Pike County court system. I understand that every case is different and should be handled on its own merit. What kind of message is our court system sending the parents who are in contempt of court for nonpayment of child support? The court system is allowing these parents to get away with it. If the judge would enforce the court order, including jail if necessary, then maybe these parents would take care of their responsibilities. Neglecting to pay child support to meet their children’s’ needs is an offense. There are no excuses that make it okay to abandon their responsibilities to their children. If they are court ordered to pay, why should they get away with not paying? The courts have the authority to protect the innocent children -use it. They’re protecting the wrong party. Enough already! Hold them accountable. In closing, I realize that some non-custodial parents are doing the best that they can do and make regular payments. I applaud them Brittany McKee Milford
