Backward or forward
To the editor: As a child growing up in Florida nearly 60 years ago I couldn’t understand why my black friends couldn’t go to the same school as me. I couldn’t play basketball in school because I was a girl. Then as a primary grade teacher, art and music were drastically cut to make way for the “basics” because of No Child Left Behind. All my life I have lived with choices already made for me. Recently I had problems with the school district and the state police not addressing problems, and neighbors jokingly, say “This is Pike County. We’re backwards here.” We have an unprecedented chance now to change that. We can make a once in a lifetime choice. We can vote to continue the establishment with a Bush/McCain presidency, a Clinton presidency, or we can vote for someone new. Someone who will help our veterans regain a life they deserve, who will reverse our broken economy, make college more affordable with $4000 grants, give us realistic affordable choices for health care, fix social security, unite our country and world leaders to help heal the earth and start to change the imperialistic view other nations have of us. We can prove to the nation that Pike County is not backwards after all. We have voted for Barack Obama! Elaine McCann Milford
