Don't encourage them

To the editor: This message is for members of the media who possess not only a heart, but a brain: I urge you to please not publicize the name and personal details of the perpetrator of the Colorado shootings and perpetrators of similar crimes. By publicizing this information you must realize that you are giving these sick, unfortunate individuals precisely what they are seeking — instant fame and recognition. You have to know that by publicizing the details of these murders and murderers that you’re also providing push for the next would be murderer. You don’t need the next sensational murder story so badly that you want to aid in its creation, do you? By all means tell us all about the heroes and victims of these awful events and celebrate their lives and accomplishments. But let’s leave the names and details of the murderers to rot in the obscurity they’ve earned. Please understand that I do believe there is value in studying these people, their lives and motivations, but please leave them anonymous. Julia Griffin Warwick, N.Y.
