In response to abortion position

I wish to respond to the letter written by Janeth DeGraw which was published in the Nov. 14 issue of the Courier. Not knowing too much about the Ryan Balton issue and not feeling qualified to speak on the school board issues raised in the letter, I will leave them unaddressed. However, I can’t leave unaddressed the glaring error in the letter. The Constitution does not give a woman the right to abortion - the word abortion does not appear in the Constitution at all. Among other rights, the Constitution gives us the right to privacy; it does not give us the right to kill anyone. The “right to abortion” in this country is based on the Supreme Court’s Roe vs Wade decision in 1973. Simply stated, in that decision the court decided that because of privacy rights granted in the Constitution, a woman and her doctor have the right to privacy when making the decision as to whether or not to abort a fetus. An abortion causes a fetus to be prematurely expelled; an action usually resulting in the death of the fetus. Reasonable discussion about any subject must be based on truth. Let us keep the record straight as to what the law actually says and not tell those who are unsure of the history that the Constitution says something that it absolutely does not say. Incidentally, Ms DeGraw, I feel it is my business if citizens of this country are being murdered. I have a right, granted by the Constitution, to speak in opposition to something that I believe is a moral injustice. Irene DeVito Milford
