Proud of old Milford

To the editor: This is a response to Susan Dreher’s letter, “Proud New Yorker” Born and raised in Milford and then transplanted to Jersey upon college graduation, I can empathize with your attachment to New York. It’s been 33 years. since I lived in Milford, but I’ve visited often, since my parents and sister still live there. Through the years of visiting and reading the Dispatch, I’ve seen many changes to the landscape and atmosphere of Milford and surrounding communities, some good and others not so good. If you ask any of the natives (and there are lots of them) what bothers them most about the influx of people to the area; their response would most likely be “that the city people want everything here, that they left behind,”- malls, fast food, coffee joints and so on. They may also comment on how their taxes have steadily risen or how you can never cross the street, any time of the year, because the roads weren’t built to handle the current population. Believe it or not, Milford survived quite nicely without all these current trimmings. Search out some natives to the area and ask them what they miss about the “old” Milford. Perhaps you won’t like the Milford they describe, but at least respect what they feel they’ve lost. I think Milford was a unique, quiet oasis. However, it’s becoming synonymous with anywhere USA.
