Hear ‘astonishing variety’ of classical music while walking around Milford

The variety of music this year may surprise a lot of listeners, as the historic district of Milford hosts its fifth annual Classical Music Celebration on Saturday, Aug. 7.

Most of the performances will be outdoors at venues throughout the borough. There is no admission charge.

“The idea is to expose people who just happen to be walking around Milford that day as well as music lovers to the beauty and the astonishing variety of classical music,” said Yosif Feigelson, artistic director of Kindred Spirits Arts Programs, the producer of this event. “Rain or shine, everyone is welcome to bring lawn chairs and umbrellas.”

In addition to spotlighting veteran musicians and ensembles, the festival gives our region’s rising talent a chance to shine, says Feigelson. “To that end, there’ll be impromptu performances in front of businesses and in Ann Street Park,” he said.

Feigelson points out that this year, which is the 20th anniversary of Kindred Spirits, all concerts as well as this festival have been free, so contributions are greatly appreciated

“We thank the Borough of Milford for allowing us to use the park,” he added. “And we’re grateful to the Milford Hospitality Group for the use of the Delmonico Cottage Green.”

Opening

1:30 p.m. Milford Community House, corner Broad and Harford Streets

Mountain Winds Woodwind Quintet

2 p.m. Ann Street Park Gazebo, corner of West Catharine and 5th Streets

This active chamber ensemble will perform music by Beethoven, Ewazen, Rota, and Reicha. Its members include Donna Predmore, flute; Molly Malone, oboe; Marta Oberlin, clarinet; Jenny Galunic, horn; Travis Williams, bassoon.

Organ and harpsichord recital

3 p.m. Good Shepherd Episcopal Church, 110 West Catharine Street

An expert musician and scholar, Jane MacAlla Livingston will perform half of her selection on each of two instruments. She calls this program “gems from musical geniuses” because it features the music of Bach, Purcell, Couperin, Charpentier, Liszt, and Brahms.

Attendees are encouraged to wear masks and practice social distancing for this indoors performance.

All-American: Brass Quintessence

4 p.m. Dimmick Inn, corner of Broad and Harford Streets

This much-in-demand brass quintet from Orange County, N.Y., returns with an array of American compositions by the likes of Ives, Gershwin, Bernstein, and Copland. The players are Stephen Austin, Keith Riddick, Craig Fryer, Sam Shackleton, and Pam Dunleavy.

Duets for Strings

5 p.m. Ambience Furniture and Fine Gifts, 200 East Harford Street

Yuris Gute, the principal violist of the Rockland Symphony Orchestra (and an expert violinmaker!), and up-and-coming violist Palak Oza will perform duos by Handel, Telemann, Valensin, and Pleyel.

Marimba Magic

6 p.m. Delmonico Cottage Green, 110 East Catharine Street

A Yamaha artist and winner of numerous competitions and awards, New Jersey-based Greg Giannascoli has appeared as a soloist with orchestras and in recitals across this country and abroad. Pianist Ron Stabinsky will be an accompanist. The program includes works by Bach, Popper, Kreisler, Rimsky-Korsakov, Gershwin, and Bernstein.
