Two Delaware Valley High School students were recently nominated by U.S. Representative Matt Cartwright (PA-08 )as candidates to prestigious United States Service Academies. He nominated 19 residents of Northeastern Pennsylvania

The U.S. Air Force Academy, U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, U.S. Military Academy at West Point, and U.S. Naval Academy each require applicants to receive a nomination from a member of Congress to attend the school. The nomination process is highly competitive and the privilege of attending a service academy comes with the obligation and commitment to serve in the military upon graduation.

“The U.S. Service Academies have a long tradition of excellence,” Rep. Cartwright said. “These nominees have proven their willingness to lead and inspire those around them. Not only do they excel in academics, but they have demonstrated high moral character, honor and duty to their schools, local communities and their country.”

Gabrielle Courtwright, from Milford, is one nominee. She is the daughter of Ralph Courtwright, Jr. and Kathy Courtwright and is a senior at Delaware Valley High School, where she has been named to the high honor roll. Gabrielle has also been involved in varsity basketball and lacrosse teams and serves as captain on the field hockey team. Along with sports, she is active in peer tutoring and youth camps in the area. She has been nominated to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York.

Yost is the son of Elisa and Alex Yost and a senior at Delaware Valley High School, where he is an active member of the National Honor Society and the Math Honors Society. Liam is a member of the soccer and wrestling teams and captain of the lacrosse team. He is part of the Honesdale Marching Band and served as a representative for the Hugh O’Brien Youth (HOBY) Leadership Seminar. Liam volunteers with his local fire department and his church.
