Letter to the editor: Vote democracy

| 11 Aug 2026 | 12:52

There seems to be a misconception among citizens living in our country that the idea of a system of government called socialism would be acceptable as a replacement of the current format – democracy. First thing to remember is that our current government was created by our ancestors (Washington, Jefferson, Madison etc.) as a democracy.

From the dictionary: Democracy is a system of government where the citizens hold the power. Equality: All people have equal rights under the law. Freedom: People can speak, write and meet freely.

From the dictionary: Socialism is a political system where the government owns and controls means of production -such as factories, land and resources, almost all businesses and production. A system of society in which there is no private property. A system of society in which the means of production are owned and controlled by the government. It is a stage of society in Marxist theory that is between capitalism and communism.

Think of the consequences that will happen to business and property owners in this country if we allow the replacement of our democratic society. Freedom and gain will eventually be controlled by the government. Forget about freedom of speech in newspapers like this one. There will be no protesting with signs on street corners about political issues or problems within our country. Only what the government approves will be allowed.

No matter how nice a politician maybe, voting against democracy will destroy everything our ancestors have fought for, since the inception of this country. Changes to ideas and political direction can happen, within our democracy as have happened previously during our country’s history. The Democratic format does not need to be replaced.

Vote democracy during the upcoming elections.
